Abstract

Optimizing culture conditions is essential for enhancing growth performance and maintaining physiological health in aquaculture systems. This study evaluates the effects of stocking density and water exchange rates on the growth performance and hematological indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) under controlled rearing conditions. Experimental treatments were established using varying stocking densities combined with different water exchange regimes to assess their interaction on fish growth, feed utilization, and physiological responses. Key performance indicators included weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, and survival rate, while hematological parameters such as hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, red and white blood cell counts, and stress indicators were analyzed to assess fish health. Results indicated that moderate stocking densities coupled with optimal water exchange rates significantly improved growth performance and feed efficiency, while maintaining stable physiological conditions. High stocking densities, particularly under reduced water exchange, led to decreased growth rates, elevated stress responses, and altered hematological profiles indicative of compromised health. Conversely, adequate water exchange mitigated the negative effects of higher stocking densities by improving water quality and reducing metabolic waste accumulation. The study highlights the importance of balancing stocking density and water management to optimize productivity and ensure fish welfare in intensive aquaculture systems. While analytical techniques were used to evaluate physiological and performance responses, the primary focus remains on practical aquaculture management. These findings provide actionable insights for fish farmers to enhance production efficiency, maintain fish health, and promote sustainable aquaculture practices in rainbow trout farming systems.
