Allelopathic Potential of Aqueous Extracts from Sorbus aucuparia on Weed Suppression in Organic Canola Fields

Weed management remains a major challenge in organic cropping systems, where reliance on synthetic herbicides is restricted. This study evaluates the allelopathic potential of aqueous extracts derived from Sorbus aucuparia on weed suppression in organic canola fields. Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the inhibitory effects of varying extract concentrations on weed germination, seedling growth, and overall weed density under organic management conditions. Key parameters measured included germination percentage, root and shoot elongation, weed biomass, and crop performance indicators such as plant height, biomass accumulation, and yield. Results demonstrated that aqueous extracts of S. aucuparia exhibited significant inhibitory effects on dominant weed species, reducing germination and early seedling growth in a concentration-dependent manner. Moderate extract concentrations provided effective weed suppression without adversely affecting canola growth, whereas higher concentrations showed slight phytotoxic effects on the crop. The application of plant-derived extracts contributed to reduced weed pressure, improved crop competitiveness, and enhanced yield performance compared to untreated controls. The study highlights the potential of allelopathic plant extracts as an eco-friendly weed management strategy in organic farming systems. While analytical techniques were used to evaluate plant responses, the primary focus remains on practical agronomic applications and sustainable crop production. These findings provide valuable insights for farmers seeking natural alternatives to chemical herbicides, supporting the development of integrated weed management strategies that align with organic agriculture principles and promote environmental sustainability.
